ANNOUNCEMENTS & UPDATES

SILENT WALK
Julie states there were two DV deaths in the past month. We need to consider doing a silent walk. The first available Wednesday is May 14. Those who work downtown will be able to join. Someone said Our VOICE task force meets at noon that day. It is also the week of a conference. The next Wednesday is the May 21st. No one has a conflict with that date. It is agreed to have the Silent Walk at 1230 on Wednesday, May 21. Julie will send something out to the coalition and to the media contacts outlined in her notebook.

Working groups – IDENTIFY GAPS AND SERVICES (Amy Hobson & Susan Anderson)
(1) They would like to create a list of all available resources from each service provider. We do have the map, but they want something smaller that can be given to a victim. I gave them a sample of a folded card which had been created when the map was first created. It has not been updated in years. It had multiple providers listed on it and folded into a business size card. They will look at this and see if it can be modified for their use.
(2) Some people are missing at the table today to discuss the next topic. The problem is victims not showing up for their court date. When this happens, the case may be dropped. However, communication problems may be occurring and the victim may not know when the court date is because they have moved. We need to do some brainstorming on this issue.
(3) In NC, there have been 23 DV deaths by gun. Buncombe is the 3rd worse in the state. Per NC, abusers cannot have a gun if there is a protective order on them and if there was threatening involved. This is not the case with federal law. There is a gap between federal law and NC law. Apparently, federal law pre-empts state law. This working group would like to meet with those involved (judges, law enforcement) to try to help victims. They will schedule a meeting with them individually and get back with us.

FALL CONFERENCES
Elizabeth wants feedback on a conference she wants to schedule that coincides with Octobers DV month. She gave out information at the last meeting on several conferences for people to review.

Possibilities:
(1) Carolyn West – on cultural issues in DV
(2) Jeffrey Edelson - children witnessing DV
(3) Men Stopping Violence – Targeting Men
(4) Can discuss DV & Hispanics
(5) Faith International – on the faith community
(6) Jacqueline Campbell – Danger Assessment

We might consider having breakout sessions if interested in smaller topics. There was just a great conference on Latino and DV, so there is no need to repeat that. There has not been a conference targeting men. The danger assessment might be interesting as a breakout session.

Result: Elizabeth will see if Men Stopping Violence is available as the main conference and if Jacqueline Campbell is available as a breakout session.

People interested in being on her committee should email her at Elizabeth.Flemming@mahec.net. They would meet about once a month. Each person would have a task – i.e. organize sponsors, market programs, getting CEUs, help setup the day of the program. If you know of someone who would be interested in sponsoring the conference, let her know.

Next month, Susan Fisher has agreed to meet and discuss current bills going through legislature.

Next meeting is June 13, 2008.

Sincerely
Anne Parker http://www.abcpfv.org/
